So here it is a week later, the Mass Effect Development
Tutorial! So I've made you wait long enough, let's just get straight into it...
I tried a different technique in my initial sketching stage
this time. I used the mirroring tool in Painter 12 to draw both sides so that
the armour was drawn equally on both sides. I think this is a good way of
drawing people when drawing when your eye is exactly centred to the middle of
them. I initially drew a planet in the background which would have emulated one
of my reference pictures; however, this was cut (see stage three).
I now ink the piece in jet black. I have turned off the
mirroring tool to do this to create slight imbalance as nothing is ever exactly
the same (like when drawing eyes). I also blacked out the background to give it
a space feel, although at this point I was still planning to draw a planet in
the background.
Now I add in my flats and my secondary ink layer which adds
detail to the armour. At this stage I blacked out the background entirely as I
thought it would look better just Shepherd by himself surrounded by darkness. I
then add some darker shades onto the armour to give the piece lighting.
The final stage I do my final editing. I added more shadows
in Painter and even out the shading by using blurs. I take the piece into final
editing where I adjust the contrast and darkness in Picasa. That's it!
This piece took me about two hours and the mirror tool was a real time saver, I'm sure without it the initial stage may have taken at least another hour. I like this piece also in the future I will try and make sure all of my pieces have a bit more texture to them. Thank you for reading :)
Do you like the way this turned out? Could I improve anything for my next piece? Please comment
